Position description

We are seeking an ASSISTANT PROFESSOR in the field of Integrative Plant Physiology to address important plant topics in model, crop, and/or ecological systems. Research should be principally physiological, while drawing on experience or collaborations in research at the genetic, biochemical, cellular, organismal, and/or ecosystem level, to develop broad approaches to solving fundamental problems that impact local agricultural and/or natural resource issues.

The title and rank is Assistant Professor. Appointment level and salary will be competitive, commensurate with accomplishments, and include a research appointment in the Agricultural Experiment Station.

The location will be at the University of California, Riverside. The successful candidate will have a faculty appointment in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences.

The department has considerable breadth with research spanning from the molecular to the ecosystem level and from fundamental science to natural resources and applied agriculture. Within this spectrum, the department has increasing national and international recognition in the areas of fundamental plant cellular/molecular/genome biology. The department also has a strong focus group in the areas of populations/ecology/ecosystems/natural resources. The department has a long history of improving local agriculture, which presents a wide diversity of crops including citrus, avocado, and other tree crops; fruits and vegetables; ornamentals; cereals; and legumes; as well as developing new commodities including biofuel crops. Plant physiology has always been a strong component of the departmental mix, and we now seek to strengthen and expand research in plant physiology with a program that links to one or more of our other focus areas of cellular/molecular/genomic, populations/ecology/ecosystems/natural resources, and/or agricultural research.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. with dissertation research in some aspect of plant physiology or a related field. Significant postdoctoral experience or equivalent in plant physiology, particularly integrative aspects, is strongly preferred.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain a vigorous, innovative research program that contributes to the mission of the Agricultural Experiment Station and has strength that is demonstrated through publications in refereed journals, funding from extramural grant agencies, and training of graduate students and postdoctoral associates. While the particular research system of study by the successful candidate is open, the expectation is that the research will be fundamental, possibly incorporating a model system, and translatable to solution of local agricultural and ecological challenges. Teaching responsibilities will include formal courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, most likely in plant physiology, as well as graduate and/or undergraduate research seminar offerings as linked to the research program. Service and professional activities are also expected components in the advancement and promotion process.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, including a statement of research and teaching interests, and letters from three references to https://aprecruit.ucr.edu/apply/JPF00082
Other inquiries should be directed to the search committee chair, Eugene Nothnagel (eugene.nothnagel@ucr.edu).

Review of applications will begin on January 13, 2014 and will continue until the position is filled. Websites: http://www.plantbiology.ucr.edu/ and http://cnas.ucr.edu/, especially http://cnas.ucr.edu/about/centers/.
