Associate Specialist Position at UCR


Position Description:
The School of Education (SOE) at the University of California Riverside (UCR) is committed to its mission to advance educational systems and practices which are driven by core values of equity, evidence, excellence, community, critical thinking, and compassion. Located in the Inland Empire, a racially and economically diverse region on Tribal lands, UCR is a land-grant public institution designated as a Hispanic-Serving, Minority-Serving, and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution. Within this context, we seek to hire a part-time (40% appointment) Associate Specialist that has demonstrated exceptional talent as a researcher and writer. This position will join the School of Education’s project funded by the Stuart Foundation to provide curriculum development and narrative writing tied to highly contentious schooling contexts. The case studies will draw on examples from California and will be aimed to inform researchers, policy makers, and the broad public. The curriculum to be developed will draw on a survey of principals and will be designed to provide students with an opportunity for an informed discussion of educational issues that impact their lives.

Responsibilities and Examples of Duties:
Under the supervision of Dr. Joseph Kahne, the Associate Specialist will contribute to the following efforts

  1. Identify exemplary efforts occurring in California schools that effectively help educators support all students' healthy development and opportunities for informed engagement with contentious issues.
  2. Develop engaging case studies that provide readers (including the broad public) with compelling examples of ways that educators can meet the needs of all students and support their informed engagement with civic issues.
  3. Develop compelling curriculum for middle and high school age students that supports interdisciplinary skills of analysis and evidence-based argument.

Qualifications:
Master’s degree in education, or related field or five to ten years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization. Proven record of academic accomplishments, including contributions to published or in-press research in the field and a demonstrated record of university and/or public service. Knowledge of K-12 leadership. Demonstrated ability to work with K-12, teachers and students.
