Position description

The Division of Clinical Sciences at the University of California, Riverside is recruiting a Clerkship Director within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN). This position offers excellent opportunities for teaching and pursuing a career in academic medicine, with time dedicated to teaching and scholarly activity. Experience in adult in-patient, office procedures, outpatient OBGYN and community health care is required. Successful candidate may practice at the UC Riverside School of Medicine Outpatient Clinic and UCR affiliated hospitals. The incumbent will have a concurrent academic appointment in an appropriate academic/clinical department and is expected to participate in clinical service (at 60%) and clerkship duties (at 40%), in addition to research, or scholarly activities. Additional qualifications include the demonstration of outstanding academic accomplishments and trajectory which may include innovative educational program development, excellence in teaching, clinical leadership, and research or scholarly work.

Clerkship Directors, working with the Associate Dean for Clinical Medical Education, oversee the clinical education of 3rd-year medical students in their respective Clerkship at UCR SOM. The Clerkship Director is responsible for building and fostering a positive, inclusive, academic, and innovative learning environment for all students. Critically, the Clerkship Director also assures comparability of educational experiences, quality, and equivalency of student assessment and feedback across all Clerkship Sites. In addition, the Clerkship Director collaborates with UCR SOM leadership to ensure integration of the Longitudinal Ambulatory Care Clerkship (LACE) curriculum and the Curricular Emphases and Threads along with other required curricular elements of their Clerkships. Finally, the Clerkship Director reports to the Associate Dean for Clinical Medical Education and assures the integration of their clerkship content with the content of the other clerkships across the third and fourth year.

A Clerkship Director designs, manages, and evaluates their course or clerkship in keeping with the overall school learning objectives, directives of the Associate Dean for Clinical Medical Education, recommendations of the Medical Education Committee (MEC), Clinical Curriculum Subcommittee (CCS), Clerkship Operations Team Subcommittee (COT) or any subcommittees, and relevant national society or accreditation recommendations directed to their subject matter. The Clerkship Director communicates these expectations for participation and implementation of their course/clerkship to their students, staff, instructors, administration, and faculty.

Critically, Clerkship Directors will assure clear and consistent communication with the educational leaders at all sites where students rotate within the clerkship. The Clerkship Director will also assure relevant communication of goals and objectives, assessment and evaluation processes, and faculty development for the residents and faculty at partner sites.

The Clerkship Team and the MEC will monitor the overall accomplishments of the course/clerkship, and any necessary or significant revisions in content will need to be approved by the CCS and MEC.

The Clerkship Director needs to remain informed of trends and practices in medical education, pedagogy, technology, administration and LCME accreditation standards. Planning involves consultation with staff and instructors, administration, the faculty, and the Office of Faculty Development.

The Clerkship Director is responsible for developing and maintaining a vision for the short and long-term development and activity of their Course/Clerkship. This ongoing effort entails development, planning, reporting, and monitoring.

Additionally, the Clerkship Director demonstrates scholarly activities and assumes leadership roles in UCR SOM educational endeavors. Clerkship Director Specific Activities:

  • Prepare formative and summative written assessment to each student based on individual evaluators’ feedback

  • When asked, provide timely letters of recommendation, if able, when asked, for students applying to residency programs.

  • Ensure that clinical teaching faculty have a faculty appointment at UCR SOM.

  • Work with the clerkship affiliate site coordinators to achieve consistent clerkship experiences across all sites.

  • Work directly with clinical affiliate sites to ensure that all requirements related to accreditation are addressed and in place.

  • Conduct semi- annual visits to each clinical site in the clerkship.

  • Assist with implementing programs covering topics on teaching and evaluation for their resident physicians and faculty.

  • Work with Associate Dean of Clinical Medical Education and Senior Associate Dean of Medical Education (or designee) to recruit and maintain clinical affiliate teaching sites.

  • Collaborate with the Associate Deans of Medical Education Quality and Assessment and Evaluation to evaluate the processes and outcomes of the subject discipline through the curriculum and prepare continuous quality improvement plans to close any clerkship performance gaps.

  • Conduct an orientation to the clerkship for all medical students at the start of each rotation.

  • Participate in local, regional, and national faculty development to enhance teaching, assessment, and program development skills.

  • Attend educational retreats for Clerkship Directors offered by the Office of Medical Education.

  • Participate in relevant working groups, as needed, that address curricular enhancement and accreditation issues.

Administrative Activities:

  • Develop curriculum including instruction and assessment sessions that are aligned with the clerkship’s competency-based learning objectives and outcomes.

  • Ensure mapping of clerkship learning outcomes and assessments to the SOM EPOs.

  • Attend, when appropriate, lectures, small group activities, teaching rounds and other course/clerkship educational activities to monitor quality and consistency.

  • Work with institutional curricular leaders to ensure that vertically integrated content is appropriately delivered within the clerkship.

  • Work closely with the MEC, CCS, COT, and other educational leaders in a collaborative fashion to shape the overall educational plan of the institution.

  • Work closely with the Associate Dean of Medical Education Quality and the Office of Medical Education to provide any necessary data or information that is required to ensure compliance with the directives and requirements of licensing and accrediting bodies.

  • Recruitment and development of new faculty with a focus on their potential as educators in specific courses/clerkships.

  • Identify and assign/reassign faculty for specific teaching responsibilities in course/clerkship and to further enhance diversity of the course/clerkship faculty. Track the quality of teaching and intervene with individual faculty when appropriate.

  • Report, when appropriate, on teaching contributions (quality and quantity) of faculty members.

  • Provide individual faculty with Director and Faculty peer feedback on their teaching activities where appropriate.

  • Calculate and calibrate student grades after defining and establishing standards and parameters for grading, adhering to school policies and directives concerning grading.

  • Provide the Registrar with student grades and competency assessments within six weeks of course/clerkship completion.

  • Systematically review student evaluations of individual teachers (including house staff), make evaluation data available to teachers and Department Chairs, and provide timely feedback to those teachers. (This may include identification of and remediation of unprofessional or abusive behavior

  • Participate in review and recommendations with respect to clerkship budgetary resources.

  • Submit to the CCS and Associate Dean for Clinical Medical Education (or designee) the director’s response to the 6-month and 12-month program evaluation review data within thirty days of report request and respond officially to any suggestions for improvement.

  • Meet at least yearly with the Associate Dean of Clinical Medical Education for performance evaluation.

  • Work collaboratively with the coordinator in assisting with managing administrative issues and functions of the Clerkship including scheduling, grading, grading appeals, student placement tasks, answering back queries from site leaders, problem-solving and conflict resolution.

Service Activities:

  • Attend and participate in clerkship director meetings, annual retreats and activities, including the Clerkship Curriculum Subcommittee, Clerkship Operational Team, Medical Education Committee.

  • Participate in assessment and remediation of students with academic difficulties.

  • Serve, when requested, in leadership roles in UCR SOM educational activities, projects, task forces, committees, etc.

  • Mentor other faculty to assume leadership roles in respective clerkships.

  • Attend national and/or regional medical education conferences related to this position.

  • Correspond using official encrypted UCR email for communicating student and school information with the school of medicine (e.g., FERPA requirement).

  • Participates in teaching and supervision of residents and fellows.

A competitive applicant must qualify for an academic appointment in the Professor of Clinical X or Health Sciences Clinical series at the assistant, associate or full professor ranks. The successful candidate must possess an M.D. or D.O. degree, from an accredited institution in areas such as the health professions, education, or a related field. M.D. or D.O. applicants must be board-certified in an ABMS specialty and eligible for licensure or licensed to practice in the State of California in a clinical specialty aligned with the UCR SOM clinical enterprise UCR Health. Rank and series will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
