Position description

The University of California Riverside School of Education is launching a new initiative in partnership with the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Foundation to ensure worldwide equitable access to evidence-based, high quality childhood sexual abuse prevention materials and curriculum. Thus, the School of Education invites applications for an Assistant Professional Researcher position. This is a full-time, four-year position funded by a private donor.

Our Program, School, and University
The UCR SOE is a growing community that serves both undergraduate and graduate students. Located in a region rich in racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity, SOE serves majority students of color with a high percentage of working class and first-generation college students and boasts the most diverse faculty of a School of Education in the University of California system. Divided into area groups devoted to higher education; leadership and policy; social, cultural, linguistic, and racial analysis; cognition and learning; school psychology; and special education, our collective mission is to call students to teach students and advance equitable and transformative educational systems and practices that are reflective of and responsive to our local racially and economically diverse communities.

The UCR School of Education aims to develop scientist-practitioners who will disrupt structures, policies, and practices that contribute to racial and educational inequities and work to promote the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional well-being of racially and economically diverse K-20 students through their scholarship and practice. We are seeking a colleague with critical epistemological foundations, who will demonstrate leadership and contribute to the development of a newly formed program area of Counseling that aligns with the mission to provide exceptional training, address educational and mental health disparities, and develop culturally, racially, and linguistically responsive leaders in counseling. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of systemic racism and intersecting forms of oppression (cisheteropatriarchy, classism, ableism) in reproducing inequities in counseling services and outcomes. We invite diverse candidates to apply who share the lived experiences of the populations we serve in the Inland Empire and will excel as the culturally responsive leaders we seek to produce. The School of Education is committed to growing the new counseling degree and credential program on an ongoing basis. The newly formed counseling program will be committed to excellence in counseling research and training with justice-focused impact; a strong annual applicant pool; faculty, staff, and students in the School of Education who are committed to promoting equity; and consistent support for the program from the university and college.

UCR is a member of the American Association of Universities (AAU). As a Minority Serving Institution, UCR ranks among the top public universities for Making a Public Impact (No. 20, Princeton Review) and was 1st among public universities in the U.S. for social mobility four years in a row. UCR has several designations that underscore its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. UCR is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). As the only public research university in diverse inland Southern California, UCR and the School of Education are uniquely positioned to shape effective service delivery for historically marginalized and excluded young people locally and across the state.

Position Description
We are looking for a candidate to design, implement, and disseminate research on the prevention and treatment of childhood abuse. Specifically, the position will work with the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Foundation to investigate their internationally-used Fight Childhood Abuse videos and corresponding curriculum. The videos can be viewed at https://fightchildabuse.org/.

The candidate will oversee a graduate student researcher and have approximately $200,000 to support research expenses and travel over the four year contract. The candidate will provide regular reports to the Dean of the School of Education to report on the progress of the research and budget. The candidate will also explore additional funding opportunities to support the research, such as internal UC grants, foundation funding, and public funding.

Additionally, the candidate may teach up to one course per academic quarter in the nascent School of Education Mental Health Counseling program. The course(s) taught will be determined in collaboration with the Dean.
