Position description

We are currently seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the position of Multifunctional Materials Physicist. The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in multifunctional materials physics by the time of appointment and, and have 3 or more years of research experience with a strong publication record. They should possess a deep understanding of implementing phase field models in COMSOL Multiphysics, utilizing the weak form with expertise in LLG for micromagnetic domain behavior and TDGL for ferroelectric domain behavior. Laboratory experience in measuring multifield constitutive behavior under various stress, electric field, magnetic field, and thermal loading combinations is essential. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in designing experiments, utilizing related instrumentation, and have experience in high-voltage experiments (up to 20 kV) with safety training. Proficiency in digital data acquisition systems, data analysis, and graphical presentation using MATLAB is required.

Additionally, candidates should have experience supervising and mentoring doctoral students, along with knowledge of electromagnetic field theory fundamentals and composites theory. Basic laboratory chemical safety, handling, and disposal experience, including the development of standard operating procedures for laboratory processes, are also desired. Professional Research Engineers are expected to maintain an active research agenda and record of publications. Candidates should also demonstrate clear potential for complementing and/or synergistically leveraging existing research activities within the department, college, and campus. They will be expected to support new cross-cutting efforts relevant to their expertise. Research qualifications and accomplishments equivalent to those for the Professor series, including demonstrated continuous and effective engagement in independent and creative activity of high quality and significance. Professional competence and activity equivalent to those for the Professor series. University and/or public service is required at the Full Researcher ranks.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in multifunctional materials physics by the time of appointment, which is expected to begin on June 1, 2024. The duration of the appointment will be for two years. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Advancement through the ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.

The salary range for this position is $157,000 - $253,900 "Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.
