Position description

The Center for Nano Science and Engineering at the University of California, Riverside invites applications for a Professional Assistant Research Engineer in experimental superconducting quantum electronics. Candidates are sought with demonstrated experience in: the setup and operation of cryogenic dilution refrigerator systems for quantum computing, and the operation of gas field ion sources for nanofabrication. Experience in the fabrication and testing of Josephson junctions, quantum gates, high-temperature superconductors, and microwave electronics is also desired. Successful candidates will help launch a new center for quantum materials and electronics. They will have a proven record of, or exceptional promise for, developing a vibrant independent externally-funded research program to expand center capabilities.

Professional Assistant Research Engineers are expected to maintain an active research agenda and record of publications. Candidates should also demonstrate clear potential for complementing and/or synergistically leveraging existing research activities within the department, college, and campus. They will be expected to support new cross-cutting efforts relevant to their expertise. Research qualifications and accomplishments equivalent to those for the Professor series, including demonstrated continuous and effective engagement in independent and creative activity of high quality and significance. Professional competence and activity equivalent to those for the Professor series. University and/or public service is optional at the Assistant rank but required at the Associate Researcher and Full Researcher ranks.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field by the time of appointment, which is expected to begin on January 1, 2024. The duration of the appointment will be for five years in relation to the 5 years of grant funding secured for technical staff to work on CNSE and Cal-It2 contracts. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Advancement through the ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Table(s) 14B. The salary range for this position is $115,900 – $145,600 “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.
