Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, Systems Biology (MCSB) at the University of California, Riverside invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Teaching position, appointment commencing 7/1/2024. This is a tenure track position with the same rights, privileges, and expectations as other ladder rank UCR faculty, including full membership in the UC Academic Senate. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

1) Contribute to instruction within the Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology (CMDB) and Neuroscience majors, teaching the equivalent of six courses over a three-quarter academic year.

2) Facilitate curricular development, faculty/student engagement and innovative teaching strategies within these majors to promote student success for a diverse undergraduate population.

3) Develop an educational- and/or pedagogy-focused research program or other evidence of creative work commensurate with the expectations of the Professor of Teaching series.

Candidates must have a Ph.D in the general areas of CMDB, or Neuroscience, by the date of appointment. A demonstrated record of excellence in undergraduate teaching is also required. Experience in one or more of the following areas is strongly preferred: fostering organization and development of large life science majors, educational/pedagogical research, educational grant writing, and/or student success initiatives, especially for underrepresented groups and first-generation college students. The Professor of Teaching series parallels that of the research-focused series but places emphasis on instruction-related activities. Individuals in the Professor of Teaching series are expected to provide outstanding teaching and engage in professional activity and service related to the pedagogical mission of the University of California. Advancement is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every two to three years, each of which includes substantial peer input. For the Professor of Teaching series, evidence of scholarly activity may consist of scholarship of teaching and learning, the preparation of extramural grants to support curricular projects, studies of student success, implementing pedagogical advances, and/or the development of undergraduate research initiatives.

The University of California, Riverside is a minority serving institution with a mission to transform the lives of the diverse people of California, including, on our campus, a large cohort of first-generation students and students from under-represented groups. As such, a shared commitment to this educational mission is preferred, and candidates from under-represented groups in academia are encouraged to apply.
