Position description

The Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT) invites applications for an Assistant Professional Researcher in Engineering to perform research to study the emissions and activity of mobile sources, including not limited to light-duty vehicles, heavy-duty vehicles, light-duty and heavy-duty engines, off-road equipment, marine vessels, locomotives, and other sources. The candidate will also conduct research on the air quality impacts of low-carbon and zero-carbon fuels from combustion systems and evaluate zero-tailpipe emission vehicle technologies, as well as non-exhaust emissions from mobile sources.

The Bourns College of Engineering, Center for Environmental Research & Technology (CE-CERT)’s mission is to be a recognized leader in environmental education, a collaborator with industry and government to improve the technical basis for regulations and policy, a creative source of new technology, and a contributor to a better understanding of the environment. Established in 1992 and now operating as the largest research center at the University of California at Riverside, CE-CERT brings together multiple disciplines throughout campus to address society’s most pressing environmental challenges in air quality, climate change, energy, and transportation. CE-CERT’s activities encompass all three aspects of the University of California’s overarching mission: research, education, and public service.

A successful candidate will have a proven record of, or exceptional promise for, competence in the understanding of advanced combustion systems, emissions characterization, sensor development, alternative fuels, and powertrain technologies.

Activities will include conducting independent and collaborative research to study the emissions and activity of mobile sources, including not limited to light-duty vehicles, heavy-duty vehicles, light-duty and heavy-duty engines, off-road equipment, marine vessels, locomotives, and other sources. In addition, this position will be responsible for the development and evaluation of low-cost on-board vehicle sensors for harmful emissions monitoring. Additional activities will include the independent and collaborative research to the effects of renewable/sustainable fuels on emissions and performance for various mobile sources, as well as research on non-exhaust emissions. The incumbent will perform research to evaluate the performance and energy use for mobile sources driven by electric batteries or other electricity sources and will help build the understanding and knowledge of alternative charging strategies of heavy-duty vehicle applications. The incumbent will aid in the development of a nationally recognized research program on emissions characterization from mobile and non-road sources and will build a program that will lead to the successful launch and maintenance of independent, externally funded, research.

Although teaching is not required for this Professional Research Series appointment, the applicant is expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in mechanical, chemical, or environmental engineering, and have 2 or more years of research experience with a strong publication record.

Advancement through the professional researcher ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.

The appointment is expected to begin on October 1, 2023. The duration of the appointment will be for two years dependent upon grant funding.

Review of applications will begin September 18, 2023, and the position is open until filled. To apply: Interested individuals are required to submit a cover letter, recently updated curriculum vitae, a minimum of three letters of reference, a Statement of Research, and a Contribution to Diversity Statement to the AP Recruit job posting https://aprecruit.ucr.edu/JPF01776.
