Position description

The University of California, Riverside (UCR) School of Medicine invites applications for the position of Associate Dean for Pre-clerkship Curriculum. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, this position provides oversight and support for the educational activities of the medical school in the pre-clerkship phase of the curriculum. We seek applicants with expertise in curriculum development and implementation of student instruction methodologies, assessment and tracking of student performance, evaluation of educational programs, faculty development and IT management including curriculum database, enrollment management, online curriculum delivery/management and educational portfolio management. The ideal candidate will also have background/experience with active learning methodologies, competency-based medical education principles, and educational research activities.

The Associate Dean for Pre-clerkship Curriculum will:
• Serves as content expert on definable, measurable and trackable program outcome measures.
• Review course, thread, lecture objectives for consistency with educational program objectives.
• Develop and present curricular recommendations.
• In collaboration with course and thread coordinators, develop and review curricular roadmap.
• In collaboration with course and thread directors, coordinate the pre-clerkship block courses with other curricular elements (Clinical Skills, Doctoring, LACE 1 and 2, Anatomy and Case-based Learning).
• Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Clinical Medical Education on promoting instruction and assessment that enable students to cognitively integrate the basic, clinical, population health and behavioral sciences when addressing health issues.
• In collaboration with course and thread directors, assess instruction outcomes using internal (e.g., inhouse written MCQ performance outcomes) and external measures (ex. NBME SHELF, USMLE outcomes).
• Develop and implement an effective developmental assessment system within each course and the appropriate assessment tools including oversight of the quality of in-house multiple-choice question (e.g., quizzes and examinations) – and their aligned developmental progression within and across courses.
• Ensure that all course grades and their corresponding required narrative assessment of each student is filed less than six weeks after the course is completed.
• Collaborate with other Deans on maintaining a high-quality competency-based program evaluation system.
• Document curricular outcomes, student performance, faculty performance.
• Work with the Associate Dean for Medical Education Quality and Integration in using a continuous quality improvement approach in optimizing the quality of the pre-clinical courses and phase.
• Develop and implement faculty and staff workshops related to learning and assessment strategies and enhancing student learning outcomes.
• Assist in preparation for accreditation site visits.
• Participate in student instruction and faculty development.
• Develop, refine/revise, implement effective student performance assessment tools.
• Work with faculty and Office of Student Affairs to identify students in need of remediation and appropriate plans/outcome measures for remediation.

The successful applicant must qualify for an academic appointment in Professor (tenured), Professor of Clinical X or Health Sciences Clinical series at the assistant, associate or full professor rank. The incumbent must possess an M.D., Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree, attain Board Certification (if appropriate), and will be expected to show a record of research or scholarly activities. The total time available for clinical duties (if appropriate) will be negotiated with the department Chair and the Dean of the School of Medicine. Finally, the candidate must demonstrate appropriate administrative experience and a proven record of academic and administrative leadership qualities. The incumbent will have a concurrent academic appointment in an appropriate department in the School of Medicine and participate in teaching and research or creative activities. Advancement through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.
