Position description

The Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology at the University of California, Riverside invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology available after July 1, 2023 in the area of bacterial interactions with plants. The position is an academic year (9-month) appointment in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) (http://cnas.ucr.edu/about/aes/). The position is a 60% Organized Research and 40% Instruction appointment and will be housed at the University of California Riverside. The final candidate is expected to establish an internationally recognized, externally funded research program focused on plant-bacterial interactions using modern experimental approaches such as genetics, functional genomics or metabolomics. Topics relevant to the position may include management of invasive and endemic bacterial diseases of subtropical crops in California, plant resistance to bacterial pathogens, metabolic interactions, and interactions with the plant’s microbiome. The candidate’s work will be aligned with the other faculty research programs that focus on bacterial plant pathogenesis and plant immunity.

The appointee is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, participate in campus service and outreach relevant to the California Agricultural Experiment Station.

Required qualifications that must be met at the time of application for this position include: a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, Microbiology, or a closely-related discipline; postdoctoral experience is preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Appointment level and salary are commensurate with experience.

Advancement through the Assistant Professor ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input. Faculty members who hold AES appointments have a responsibility to conduct mission- relevant research and outreach that include fundamental and applied research for the purposes of developing new knowledge and technologies addressing specific problems of importance to the people of California, and dissemination of knowledge and technology with a focus on agricultural, environmental, and societal issues related to agricultural and natural resource systems.
