Position description

The University of California, Riverside, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Plant Nematology to begin July 1, 2023. The position is a 9-month appointment in the Department of Nematology in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. Appointment level and salary are commensurate with experience. The successful candidate is expected to establish an internationally recognized, externally funded research program. The focus will be on investigations of microbial interactions with plant-parasitic nematodes that suppress plant diseases and crop damage (e.g., nematode-suppressive soils; hyperparasites of endoparasitic nematodes). The ideal applicant should be familiar with field and laboratory-based experimental approaches that utilize methodologies such as genetics, functional genomics, metabolomics, and novel microscopy. The appointee is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and participate in campus service and outreach relevant to the California Agricultural Experiment Station https://cnas.ucr.edu/resources/agricultural-experiment-station.

The Department of Nematology:
The Department of Nematology is committed to a broad-based mission in nematology research, teaching, and outreach, including strengths in ecology, agriculture, pest and disease science, parasitology, and health science. Faculty and their graduate students are highly collaborative with campus programs, including Plant Pathology, Microbiology, Entomology, Ecology & Organismal Biology, Genetics, Genomics, & Bioinformatics, Plant Biology, Evolution, and Biomedical Sciences.

Qualifications:
A Ph.D. or an equivalent research doctorate in plant pathology, nematology, mycology, microbiology, entomology, or a closely related field is required at the time of application. Postdoctoral training and proven scholarly productivity are preferred. Expertise in biological control of plant-parasitic nematodes is desirable.

Applications:
Candidates must apply through https://aprecruit.ucr.edu/apply/JPF01645 and include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and separate research and teaching interest statements. A statement addressing the candidate’s past and potential future contributions to promoting academic diversity must be included. In addition, applicants should request that three letters of recommendation be submitted through this site. For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to submit their applications by December 31, 2022, but the position will remain open until filled. As part of the process, the committee might decide to hold a brief, ~30-minute zoom interview with candidates before making final decisions about the interview list.
