Position description

The Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology at the University of California, Riverside invites applications for an Associate/Assistant Professor in the area of Mammalian Virology. Research topics could include the molecular biology of RNA viruses, virus-host interactions, innate/adaptive immunity, viral pathogenesis and antiviral development. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2023.

The candidate will join an expanding group of Mammalian Virologists in the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology and other units on campus. They will become members of the multidisciplinary Institute for Integrative Genome Biology (IIGB) that connects theoretical and experimental researchers from different departments in Life, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Medicine, Engineering and various campus-based Centers. The IIGB is organized around large suite of Instrumentation Facilities that serve as a centralized, shared use resource for faculty, staff and students, offering advanced tools in bioinformatics, microscopy and imaging, proteomics, metabolomics, and genomics. Collaborations are also expected with colleagues in the new School of Medicine, which has a growing faculty with expertise in infectious disease, immunology and inflammation. Finally, a modern vivarium and BSL3 facility are also located close to the candidate’s laboratory.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain a vigorous, innovative, strong extramurally–funded research program, teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and participate in departmental and interdepartmental graduate programs. They will be a catalyst to strengthen multidisciplinary collaborations addressing fundamental biological questions in mammalian virology.

The Required qualification for this position that must be met by the date of application is a Ph.D./MD in Life Sciences or a related field.

Preferred qualifications for this position that must be met at the time of application include: working on mammalian model systems using state-of-the-art technologies, including systems biology approaches, genome-wide screening, or bioengineering techniques to re-engineer native proteins/small compounds.

Ph.D./MD in Life Sciences or a related field.

Preferred qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates working on state-of-the-art mammalian model systems using systems biology approaches, large-scale genomics, high-throughput sequencing, and/or bioinformatics.
