Position description

The Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology at UC Riverside invites applications for Assistant Project Scientist I or II. A Ph.D. that includes considerable bioinformatics training is required. The appointment will be available April 1, 2018.

The successful applicant should have the following skills and attributes: (i) be proficient in bioinformatic analyses including using Robert Edgar’s pipelines for analyses of bacterial and fungal rRNA genes and rRNA ITS sequences, filtering out unwanted rRNA genes and rRNA ITS sequences using strategies based on BLAST and NCBI Taxonomic IDs, using QIIME for analyses of bacterial and fungal rRNA genes and rRNA ITS sequences, (ii) be proficient in writing code using Python and Bash scripts to optimize analyses and pipelines to examine bacterial and fungal rRNA genes and rRNA ITS sequences, (iii) be proficient in using R for graphing and statistical analyses, (iv) be proficient in growing mammalian cells in GALT Inc. arrays, (v) be proficient in fixing technical and minor mechanical problems associated computers and laboratory equipment, (vi) be proficient in mammalian cell culture, (vii) be proficient in constructing Illumina sequencing libraries, (viii) ability to learn and understand how sugar beets are grown in the Imperial Valley (CA) and, (ix) ability to develop working relationships with members of the sugar beet community in the Imperial Valley (CA) such as growers and members of Spreckels Sugar Company.
