Position description

Cluster hire to build a group in
MATHEMATICAL MODELING OF COMPLEX BIO-SYSTEMS

Applications are invited for a 9-month tenure-track or tenured position at the Assistant or Associate Professor levels beginning July 1, 2018, as a part of the second phase of the cluster hiring initiative in Mathematical Modeling of Complex Biosystems at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). Two positions were filled last year.

The University of California at Riverside is implementing a major expansion of its faculty and investing in state-of-the-art research facilities to support their work. This expansion will build critical mass in 34 vital and emerging fields of scholarship, foster truly cross-disciplinary work, and further diversify the faculty at one of America’s most diverse research universities. We encourage applications from scholars committed to excellence and seeking to help define the research university for the next generation. For more information about our hiring initiative, please visit clusterhiring.ucr.edu or aprecruit.ucr.edu.

Applications are welcome from those with a Ph.D. in the fields relevant to Mathematical Biology as well as with a strong interdisciplinary background. Preference will be given to applicants developing and using methods of (1) Stochastic Modeling and Uncertainty Quantification and (2) Multi-scale Mathematical and Computational modeling with applications to (i) Cellular Regulatory Networks, (ii) Developmental Systems, (iii) Host-pathogen interaction systems, and (iv) Biomedical systems. Candidates with interests in plant systems are particularly encouraged to apply.

The target departments include mathematics and statistics departments, five life science departments (Botany and Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Plant Pathology, Molecular, Cell and Systems Biology, Biochemistry and Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology), computer science and several engineering departments including Bioengineering, as well as the School of Medicine. To maximize cross-departmental impact, all hires have the option to join one main department as well as one secondary department as a cooperating faculty within the same or another college.

Tenure track assistant professor applicants are expected to have demonstrated excellence in research and teaching, normally including major contributions beyond the doctoral dissertation. Tenured associate professor applicants must, in addition, demonstrate excellence in leadership in their research programs, and experience in mentoring graduate students and junior faculty members. Responsibilities of this position include teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses and seminars, conducting interdisciplinary scholarly research and participation in departmental and university service activities. Established criteria of the University of California will determine the salary and the level of appointment.

To apply: Application materials for the Assistant Professor position should be submitted through https://aprecruit.ucr.edu/apply/JPF00846. Associate level applicants should apply through https://aprecruit.ucr.edu/apply/JPF00847.

Please provide a full curriculum vitae, cover letter, a description of proposed research, and statement of teaching philosophy and statement addressing potential to successfully work with and benefit a diverse student body. Applicants for the Assistant Professor level position should arrange for submission of three letters of recommendation. Applicants for the Associate Level position should provide names and email addresses of three reference letter writers. One of the reference letters should explicitly address the candidate's teaching and mentoring abilities.

Evaluation of applications will begin on December 1st, 2017, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
