Professor of Teaching/Director of the UWP Entry-Level Program and Associate Director of the University Writing Program:

The University Writing Program at the University of California, Riverside, is seeking applicants for Professor of Teaching with SOE (Security of Employment). Full-time titles in this category are faculty positions designed to meet the long-term instructional needs of the University. All appointments in this series require achievement in three areas: teaching, scholarly professional activity, and service. Candidates must be outstanding teachers. They should have a record of scholarly professional activity including professional leadership, and they should be able to demonstrate a commitment to campus service. SOE (Security of Employment) appointments require qualifications that include senior level scholarly professional activity and experience, distinction in the field, and service of exceptional value to the University.

Professors of Teaching with SOE are members of the academic senate. Teaching responsibilities vary according to the nature of the appointment. (See the teaching load for each UWP position below). Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant field. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with education and experience.

The ELWR Director is responsible for testing, placement, course design, TA-training, program evaluation, and other duties related to UC Riverside’s Entry-Level Program, which is designed to help students pass the University of California’s Entry-Level Writing Requirement. The ELWR program cooperates with our Writing Project site’s high-school visitation and teacher-training programs. It provides summer testing and plays a role in summer bridge programs. During the regular academic year, it offers four levels of instruction, including ESL, to thousands of students.

The ELWR Director is an ex officio member of the UCR Senate’s Committee on Preparatory Education. He/she also participates in the Systemwide development and scoring of the annual UC Analytical Writing Placement Examination. In addition, the ELWR Director participates in the UC Systemwide Council of Writing Programs, and serves as an ex officio member of the UWP’s committee for curriculum and personnel.

The ELWR Director leads the Fall ELWR Orientation and quarterly norming sessions for all ELWR instructors, as well as teaching English 302 (the two-unit ELWR TA training course) in the Fall. The ELWR Director also mentor TAs and Lecturers, especially those teaching ELWR courses. He/she supervises the shaping of ELWR syllabi and recruits and trains undergraduate tutors for our mainstreaming version of English 1A. As Associate Director of the UWP, the ELWR Director also assists the UWP Director with projects such as program evaluation.

Classroom teaching in addition to and part of the ELWR Director’s duties:
Four 4-unit composition courses (1-1-2 or some variation) and one 2-unit TA-training course (English 302) in the Fall.

Other responsibilities include ongoing interaction with the other UWP assistant and associate directors, including the occasional exchange of one or more duties, as supervised by the UWP Director.
