Position description

The University of California at Riverside (UCR) is implementing a major expansion of our faculty and investing in state-of-the-art research facilities to support their work. This expansion will build critical mass in 34 vital and emerging fields of scholarship, foster truly cross-disciplinary work, and further diversify the faculty at one of America’s most diverse research universities. We encourage application from scholars committed to excellence and seeking to help define the research university for the next generation. For more information about our hiring initiative or to submit an application, please visit clusterhiring.ucr.edu or academicpersonnel.ucr.edu.

UCR is recruiting a cluster of 3 hires in the target area of Coherent Optical Control of Matter. These faculty will build a common infrastructure to advance the potential of atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) science and technology to control the quantum world. These advances could be in areas as diverse as, but not limited to, precision measurements including QED, gravity and general relativity, exploration and control of electronic and molecular processes, and quantum information technology which address grand challenges in physics and astronomy, chemistry, material science, electrical engineering, and computer science.

The successful candidates will be expected to establish an outstanding and well-funded research program involving graduate and undergraduate students, and postdoctoral scientists, contribute to teaching at all levels, and as a cluster create a multidisciplinary group of researchers that share advanced skills in optical science and technology with the freedom to explore next generation applications without disciplinary constraints. They should strengthen the current campus research activities in laser spectroscopy and optical control. The campus has active research programs in experimental laser spectroscopy in fundamental physics, chemistry, nanomaterials and next generation electronic materials, and theory of quantum information and optical lattices in the Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry, and Electrical Engineering departments. The hires will be recruited to potential home departments most likely Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry, or Electrical Engineering and through cooperative faculty arrangements, the faculty should be able to recruit graduate students from other departments as appropriate.

Candidates for this position are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in physics, chemistry, electrical engineering or a related field, with preference for Ph.D. research in quantum optics and significant independent research experience in advanced applications of optical control. Candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, Statement of Research, Statement of Teaching, Statement of Contributions to Diversity, and contact information for at least four professional references to the AP Recruit site at: https://aprecruit.ucr.edu/apply/JPF00698. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualification. This position will be filled at the Associate or Full Professor level. Candidates for appointment at the Assistant Professor level should submit their applications to the AP Recruit site at: https://aprecruit.ucr.edu/apply/JPF00663.

UCR is a world-class research university with an exceptionally diverse undergraduate student body. Its mission is explicitly linked to providing routes to educational success for underrepresented and first-generation college students. A commitment to this mission is a preferred qualification. Advancement through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input. Minorities and members of underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Full consideration will be given to applications received by February 15, 2017. We will continue to consider applications until the position is filled. To apply, please register through the weblink at https://aprecruit.ucr.edu/apply/JPF00698. For inquiries please contact Prof. Harry Tom at harry.tom@ucr.edu.

The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applications will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
