Position description

Applications are invited for two 9-month, tenure-track or tenure positions at the Assistant or Associate levels beginning July 1, 2017, as a part of the cluster hiring initiative in Mathematical Modeling of Complex Biosystems at the University of California, Riverside (UCR).

Applications are welcome from those with strong interdisciplinary background in any area of mathematical biology. Preference will be given to applicants developing and using methods of (1) Stochastic Modeling and Uncertainty Quantification and (2) Multi-scale Mathematical and Computational modeling with applications to (1) Cellular Regulatory Networks, (2) Developmental Systems, (3) Host-pathogen interaction systems, and (4) Biomedical systems including cardio-vascular systems and blood clotting.

The target departments include mathematics and statistics departments, 5 life science departments (Botany and Plant Sciences, Plant Pathology and Microbiology, Cell Biology and Neuroscience, Biochemistry, and Biology), computer science and several engineering departments including Bioengineering Department, as well as the Medical School. To maximize cross-departmental impact, all hires have the option to join one main department as well as one secondary department as a cooperating faculty within the same or another college.

Tenure track assistant professor applicants are expected to have demonstrated excellence in research and teaching, normally including major contributions beyond the doctoral dissertation. Tenured associate professor applicants must, in addition, demonstrate excellence in leadership in their research programs, and experience in mentoring graduate students and junior faculty members. Responsibilities of this position include teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses and seminars, conducting interdisciplinary scholarly research and participation in departmental and university service activities. Established criteria of the University of California will determine the salary and the level of appointment.

Applicants for the Assistant Level position should arrange for submission of three letters of recommendation. One of the reference letters should explicitly address the candidate's teaching and mentoring abilities. A statement addressing potential contribution to academic diversity must be included.
