Position description

The Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology at the University of California Riverside invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the broad field of Mammalian Bacteriology. Applicants should have a PhD, MD or MD/PhD specializing in Microbiology or related disciplines with a minimum of two years of post-doctoral experience. A strong record of research productivity and experience in bacteria-host interaction using mammalian systems is required.

Successful applicants will contribute to the growth of Microbiology research and complement existing areas of expertise at UCR in the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, the Microbiology Graduate Program and the School of Medicine. Existing research strengths include Pathogenesis of Plant and Animal Diseases, Disease Control, Host Immune Response, and Fundamental Science of Microbes.

The candidate is expected to develop a productive, independent, extramurally funded research program. Individuals working on the following areas are particularly encouraged to apply: (1) virulence mechanisms of bacterial pathogens that cause infectious diseases in human; (2) interactions between host and pathogen using "omic" and/or systems biology tools (model systems are ideal); (3) Genetic variation and evolution of bacterial pathogens that influence disease outcome and antibiotic resistance; (4) food safety; (5) mechanisms of host immunity to bacterial infections; (6) ecology of commensal bacterial communities in mammalian health.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education. Teaching responsibilities could include introductory biology, introductory microbiology, pathogenic microbiology, microbial genetics, and graduate electives specific to the individual’s area of expertise.

The position has an instruction component and a research component within the Agricultural Experiment Station (more information about the AES mission may be found at http://cnas.ucr.edu/about/anr/).
