Position description

Assistant Specialist in Ecosystem Ecology & Biogeochemistry

The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of California invites applicants for a full-time Assistant Specialist to conduct applied research for Dr. Tamara Harms’ Lab in Riverside, CA. This position will start on September 11, 2024. The purpose of this position is to perform chemical analyses of environmental samples using Shimadzu TOC-TN, IRMS, AQ2 automated colorimeter, including data QA/QC; lead and participate in field teams collecting environmental samples (streams, soils, gas fluxes); lead protocol development for new methods in biogeochemistry of soil and water; manage and analyze datasets using reproducible workflows in R software; and contribute to maintaining an efficient and safe workspace.

The current base pay range for this position is $61,300 - $68,300.
Basic qualifications for this position that must be met by the date of application include: 1) B.S. in Ecology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, or related field, 2) experience conducting field and lab-based work in biogeochemistry, 3) skills in managing and analyzing environmental data using reproducible workflows, 4) ability to travel and safely conduct field research in remote locations, 5) an efficient and product-oriented approach to project and task management, and 6) demonstrated experience with a collaborative approach including effective communication strategies.

Preferred qualifications for this position include: 1) M.S. in Ecology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, or related field, 2) previous experience with deployment and maintenance of environmental sensors, particularly measuring dissolved organic matter, dissolved oxygen, and nitrate in streams, 3) analysis of soil and water samples for chemical constituents by mass spectrometry, automated colorimetry, gas chromatography, ion chromatography, and/or elemental analysis, with expertise in procedures for calibration and QA/QC of measurements, and 4) experience in developing and optimizing protocols for analytical chemistry.
