Physics Instructor

University of California, Riverside – Extension

In the Heart of Inland Southern California, UC Riverside is located on nearly 1,200 acres near Box Springs Mountain in Southern California; the park-like campus provides convenient access to the vibrant and growing Inland region. The campus is a living laboratory for the exploration of issues critical to growing communities’ air, water, energy, transportation, politics, the arts, history, and culture. UCR gives every student, faculty and staff member the resources to explore, engage, imagine and excel. UCR Extension is the continuing and professional education division of the University of California, Riverside offering over 80 programs and certificates to domestic and international students.

This is a continuous recruitment for part-time instructors to teach courses in Extension’s Professional Certificate in Specific Supplementary Authorization in Physics to adult learners. This program provides CA Single Subject credentialed K-12 educators with the tools to teach the specific subject (Physics) in grades preschool, kindergarten-12, and classes organized primarily for adults. This certificate program resides in the Academic Affairs Department. Courses are 7-10 weeks in length, average 4 teaching hours per week, and are offered synchronously online. Courses are typically scheduled evenings after 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday, and occasionally on Saturday. Course(s) may include an online lab component. Courses include:
PHYS X412.A Introduction to Concepts of Physics
PHYS X412.B Concepts of Physics: Mechanics
PHYS X412.C Concepts of Physics: Electricity and Magnetism
PHYS X412.D Concepts of Physics: Heat and Waves
PHYS X412.E Concepts of Physics: Atomic and Nuclear Physics

Responsibilities
• Provide instruction in accordance with the established instructional agreement,
curriculum outlines and class schedule provided by UCR Extension.
• Develop and/or revise curriculum to reflect current teaching standards and CTC course requirements.
• Provide high quality, synchronous online course instruction; including curriculum that includes a lab component.
• Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students, and clearly outline the grading policies to the course.
• Work in conjunction with collaborative partners and subject matter experts in order to ensure that course information is current.
• Participate in scheduled orientations, meetings, and mandatory training programs by UCR’s established deadlines.
• Maintain timely and accurate academic records within the learning management system and submit timely and accurate documentation as outlined in the instructional agreement.
• Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct.

Minimum Requirements
• Advanced degree in Physics, or a related science field, or equivalent experience.
• Five years of related work experience.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Ability to provide instruction online including a lab component.
• Have permission to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications
• A clear, unexpired, valid, CA Single Subject credential in a science field
• Specific Supplementary Authorization in Physics
• Experience teaching K-12 educators.
• Experience with Canvas learning platform.
• Experience teaching adult learners.
• Experience with curriculum development and course design.
