Position description

The University of California, Riverside Library seeks nominations and applications for a dynamic, innovative, collaborative, and adaptable administrator to fill the position of Assistant/ Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Research and Technology.

Under the general direction of the University Librarian, the AUL for Research and Technology provides vision, strategic direction, leadership, management, and budgetary oversight for Technology and Research Services, which includes Geospatial Information Services; the Creat’r Laboratory, the UCR Library’s MakerSpace; the Robotics Laboratory; Digital Scholarship and Initiatives; Digitization Services; and Cyberinfrastructure.

Provide strategic leadership and collaborate on policy issues affecting library functional areas, budget allocation, human resources, space planning, communication, development, technology, cyberinfrastructure, and digital initiatives, as a member of the senior library leadership team.

Collaboratively define goals and implement strategic plans for all aspects of library operations, services, programs, and infrastructure, in support of the University’s rapidly evolving research, education, and public service mission.

Provide strategic leadership and management for the planning, design, implementation, and operation of technology services, systems, and infrastructure for the University of California Riverside (UCR) Library, which includes but is not limited to: web and access systems, digitization lab software and equipment; digital scholarship infrastructure, software, and related equipment; and the core server, database, storage, backup, and web infrastructure.

Provide strategic leadership and management for advancing research services, digital initiatives, and information technology services through the rapid identification, adoption and implementation of emerging technologies and methodologies.

Serve as a highly-effective communicator with internal and external stakeholders keeping them apprised of the services being provided by the Research and Technology division, engaging in routine environmental scans of stakeholders’ needs, and ensuring that faculty and student teaching, learning, and research needs are kept in the forefront in the decision-making process of the division.

Represent the UCR Library and provide leadership in local, regional, and national forums, and in system-wide planning for technology and in regional and national forums and organizations related to library information technology such as Digital Library Federation, Joint Conferences on Digital Libraries, and the Coalition of Networked Information.

Participates in general administrative duties, library-wide activities, committees, special projects and library programs; represents the UCR Library on various University of California standing committees and ad-hoc groups.

The UCR Library is comprised of two facilities housing more than 3,800,000 volumes, 940,000 electronic books, 97,000 print and electronic journals, and 2,300,000 microforms. The Library provides services to more than 22,000 students and nearly 2,000 faculty and other academics in an institutional environment planning for and experiencing extensive growth. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic staff of 116, including 26 FTE librarians, 58 FTE support personnel, and 32 students, in building a research library of excellence within a dynamic and diverse university ranked among the top 50 in the nation. The UCR Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Among the unique collections of the UCR Library is the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy, the Water Resources Collections & Archives, the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian, the Paul Chou Collection of Chinese history and culture, the George Brown Papers, the Tomás Rivera Papers, and the Inland Empire Memories Initiative. The UCR Library is an integral part of the University of California library system. With collections totaling 30 million volumes, UC’s more than 100 libraries are surpassed in size on the American continent only by the Library of Congress collection. In addition, UC’s California Digital Library (CDL) provides the core of the University's digital collections. CDL also assists UC to share resources and holdings more effectively, and provides leadership in applying technology to the development of library collections and services. Organizationally situated within the UC Office of the President, the CDL operates in close collaboration with all UC campuses and their libraries.

UCR librarians are members of the Librarians Association of the University of California (LAUC). Research, publication, and/or service to the University and profession are expected for continuing advancement.

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range of:
Appointment at rank of Assistant University Librarian to Associate University Librarian depending upon qualifications and experience. Advancement through the librarian ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every two years, each of which includes substantial peer review. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Master’s degree in library and/or information science or equivalent.

Minimum of five years of experience managing a department or significant program in an academic institution related to Data Services, Digital Library Programs and Library Technology Services, or other applicable experience.

Significant experience in the management of information systems organizations and ability to envision and articulate strategy for information systems in support of research, teaching and learning missions of the University.

Demonstrated progressively responsible management and supervisory experience in an academic library or in higher education.

Demonstrated commitment and ability to engage others in collaborative planning and delivery of user-centered services.

Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and collaborative skills.

Demonstrated experience with program development and collaboration.

Technology skills and experience with its application in knowledge management and support of teaching and scholarship.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Demonstrated judgment, broad perspective and emotional intelligence.

Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds including healthcare providers, colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors, and alumni.

Preferred qualifications

Experience with multi-campus or consortial planning.

Sustained record of professional achievement.

Experience in securing and managing grants, philanthropic support, and cost recovery mechanisms.
