Position description

The Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE) at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) invites applications for multiple tenure-track or tenured faculty positions in the Department of Bioengineering. Highly motivated candidates, who share the entrepreneurial spirit of the BCOE faculty, and will contribute meaningfully to the success in teaching, research, and service areas are sought. Candidates are expected to initiate and sustain strong sponsored research and graduate training programs. While we are especially interested in the areas of neuroengineering, rehabilitation engineering, computational bioengineering, and biomolecular engineering, exceptional candidates in other areas of Bioengineering will also be considered.

The Bioengineering Department is currently home to 17 core faculty members. They include 4 AIMBE fellows, 3 AAAS fellows, 1 BMES fellow, 1 IEEE fellow, 1 SPIE fellow, and 1 ISMRM fellow. Our faculty conduct cutting-edge research in five focus areas: biomaterials/regenerative medicine, biomedical imaging, computational bioengineering, molecular and cellular bioengineering, and neuroengineering. Our interdisciplinary research and educational training efforts are conducted via the Bioengineering Interdepartmental Graduate Program (BIG) that includes 50 additional UCR faculty. The department offers BS, BS/MS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees, with a current enrollment of approximately 75 graduate and 350 undergraduate students. Our graduate program is a gender-balanced blend of US and international students, with two-thirds of the Ph.D. students being domestic, and of those, one-fourth are underrepresented minorities. The BS degree program in Bioengineering has been fully accredited by ABET since 2011. Opportunities for collaboration exist through multiple college-level and campus-wide initiatives, including the School of Medicine, the College of Natural Sciences, Center for glial neuronal interactions, Center for Molecular and Translational Medicine, Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering, High-Performance Computing Center, Center for Research in Intelligent Systems, Institute for Integrative Genome Biology, Interdisciplinary Center for Quantitative Modeling in Biology, Stem Cell Center, and Center for Advanced Neuroimaging.

Successful candidates will have a proven record of, or exceptional promise for, developing a vibrant externally-funded research program as well as a portfolio of high-quality teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. UC faculty are expected to maintain an active research agenda and record of publications, teach a regular course load at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and participate in service activities at the department, college campus, and professional levels. Candidates should also demonstrate clear potential for complementing and/or synergistically leveraging existing research activities within the department, college, and campus.

We are seeking highly motivated teachers and interdisciplinary researchers with demonstrated expertise in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline. Junior candidates are expected to demonstrate superior intellectual attainment in research and excellence in teaching, and develop an externally funded research program in the Department of Bioengineering. Senior candidates must have a demonstrated record of success in one of the appropriate fields of Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related discipline, and be strongly committed to both undergraduate and graduate teaching.

Appointments are expected to begin July 1, 2023. Applicants must be "all but dissertation" or have met the requirements for the PhD in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering or a related discipline at the time of appointment. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Advancement through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.

Full Consideration will be given to applications received by December 2, 2022. Applications will continue to be accepted until the positions are filled. To apply for a position, interested individuals are required to submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, three letters of references for tenure-track or contact information for three references for tenured position, a Statement or Research, a Statement of Teaching, and a Contribution to Diversity Statement to the AP Recruit website at https://aprecruit.ucr.edu/JPF01607. Inquiries should be directed to Professor Anvari anvarib@ucr.edu.
