Part-Time ESL Instructor

University of California, Riverside – University Extension

In the Heart of Inland Southern California, UC Riverside is located on nearly 1,200 acres near Box Springs Mountain in Southern California; the park-like campus provides convenient access to the vibrant and growing Inland region. University Extension is the continuing and professional education division of the University of California, Riverside offering programs and certificates to domestic and international students. University Extension values excellence and has educated international students for over forty years through our Department of International Education Programs. University Extensions Department of International Programs invites applicants for multiple part-time ESL teaching positions to provide instruction in the areas of Intensive English Programs (IEP), International Custom Programs, and Undergraduate Pathway Programs, as well as the Substitute Teaching Pool. Courses include integrated skills, grammar, writing, reading, speaking & listening, and a range of elective topics. Instruction may also include test-prep classes, English for Specific Purposes (e.g. Business English, STEAM, Entrepreneurship, etc.), or American cultural topics. In-person courses meet Monday – Friday and are generally scheduled between 9:00am and 5:00pm. Online courses meet virtually in the evening between 4pm-9pm.

Responsibilities:
• Provide instruction in accordance with the established instructional agreement, curriculum outlines and class schedule provided by University Extension.
• Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students, and clearly outline the grading policies to the course.
• Design interactive and motivational classroom activities that support the instruction of student learning objectives with a communicative aim to fully engage participants and reinforce student learning
• Work in conjunction with collaborative partners and subject matter experts in order to ensure that course information is current.
• Participate in scheduled orientations, meetings, and mandatory training programs by UCR’s established deadlines.
• Maintain timely and accurate academic records within the learning management system and submit timely and accurate documentation as outlined in the instructional agreement.
• Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct.
• Attend scheduled pre-program class-planning meeting
• Attend scheduled teachers' meetings and in-services
• Become familiar with and follow IEP’s Instructor Manual and curricular guidelines

Minimum Requirements:
• Advanced degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or a related field, or equivalent experience with TESOL Certificate.
• Five years of successful ESL teaching experience.
• Experience teaching a wide range of ESL levels and skills including integrated skills.
• Experience with computer-aided instructions and learning management systems (i.e., Moodle, CANVAS)
• Proficiency in English suitable to the position
• Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Ability to provide instruction online and in-person.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience teaching English for Specific Purposes
• Experience preparing students for TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, GRE, and/or GMAT
• Current active involvement in the field (i.e., TESOL, CATESOL)
• Proven record of contributions to a supportive team environment
• Experience with curriculum development and course design.

Employment Information:
Instructional agreements are made on a course-by-course basis at the discretion of the University with no guarantee to teach future courses. This part-time position is not eligible for benefits but participates in the University of California Defined Contribution Plan.
