Position description

Assistant Professor of Teaching in Popular Music:
Creation and Production

The Department of Music at the University of California, Riverside invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Teaching (LPSOE) in Popular Music: Creation and Production for the Department of Music with an expected starting date of July 1, 2022. This position is equivalent in level to other Assistant Professor positions, but with emphasis placed on excellence in teaching and instruction-related activities. Appointment requires: (1) The demonstration and maintenance of teaching excellence, (2) Professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity (research in pedagogy and/or music) and (3) University and public service. Applicants are expected to have demonstrated commitment to high-quality and innovative teaching. An Assistant Professor of Teaching is a member of the academic senate.

The new faculty member will engage the broad interests of UCR students on the creative and practical aspects of creating music in the highly diversified landscape of popular and commercial musics, including but not limited to audio engineering, songwriting, sound design, electronic musics, DJing, critical listening, film scoring, TV, radio, and videogames. The successful candidate will bring scholarly expertise and the ability to critically engage with one or more of the above areas. Additionally, the faculty member will have some experience in one or more of the following areas: operations of the music industry internationally, race and gender in the music industry, changing music recording technologies, music marketing, artist management, and U.S. and/or international copyright laws.

The new faculty member will teach courses in digital and popular musics, including audio recording and production, as well as devise new courses addressing students' needs and highlighting the candidate’s area(s) of specialty. The successful applicant will demonstrate excellence in teaching, with the ability to work with undergraduate and graduate students. The position also entails recruiting dedicated students to the department, mentoring students towards their professional goals, supervising undergraduate majors studying the music industry, and collaborating with colleagues in Music and across the UCR campus.

Our new colleague will serve as the chief engineer for EARS, the Department of Music’s Experimental Acoustics Research Studio. They will hold office hours at EARS, and will engage in supervising various student projects in concert production and recording that the Department of Music organizes throughout the year at ARTS, UCRArts, University Theater, and The Barn Theater. The successful candidate will demonstrate a history of (and/or plans for) mentoring students from groups that are historically underrepresented in music technology. While maintaining their own professional practice, they will create opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to produce, perform, record, and broadcast inside and outside our campus and to engage professionally within the music industry.

Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Advancement through the faculty and non-senate academic ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.

• Expertise across multiple genres of music as well as multiple aspects of the music industry (producing, recording, marketing, artist management, etc.)
• Experience with internship placement and supervision
• DMA or PhD in music or a related field
• Ability to work collaboratively, including with campus and community organizations
