The Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT) invites applications for an Assistant Professional Researcher in Engineering position in the Transportation Systems Research Group, a sub-division of CE-CERT.

The Bourns College of Engineering, Center for Environmental Research & Technology (CE-CERT)’s mission is to be a recognized leader in environmental education, a collaborator with industry and government to improve the technical basis for regulations and policy, a creative source of new technology, and a contributor to a better understanding of the environment. Established in 1992 and now operating as the largest research center at the University of California at Riverside, CE-CERT brings together multiple disciplines throughout campus to address society’s most pressing environmental challenges in air quality, climate change, energy, and transportation. CE-CERT’s activities encompass all three aspects of the University of California’s overarching mission: research, education, and public service.

The successful applicant must possess all of the following qualifications:

• Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Transportation, Computer Science, Math, or relevant field and 2 or more years of related experience.
• Strong collaboration skills—thrives working in a collaborative team environment but is comfortable working independently when necessary.
• Extensive expertise in modeling and analysis of the air quality impacts and energy demands of transportation and with tools available to minimize both.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Although teaching is not required for this Professional Research Series appointment, the applicant is expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

Activities will include cultivating and applying appropriate data resources and modeling tools to analyze the impacts of emerging transportation technologies on air quality and energy use. Examples of such transportation technologies include the use of managed lanes, video-based traffic detection, connected and automated vehicles, and electrified vehicles and infrastructure.

The preferred candidate will possess experience working with transportation and air quality datasets and with available software tools for analyzing them. Among the types of data the candidate could have experience acquiring and working with are traffic activity data, traffic or probe vehicle data, freight movement data, geospatial data, and travel survey data. Experience in transportation energy and emissions modeling is also valuable, with specific expertise in connecting heavy-duty vehicle activity to air quality impacts and in evaluating the potential roles of route optimization and technological advances in reducing those impacts.

Appointment is expected to begin on January 1, 2021. The duration of the appointment will be for two years dependent upon grant funding.
