Position description

The University of California, Riverside (UCR) School of Medicine invites applications for the position of Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education (SADME). The incumbent will have a concurrent academic appointment in an appropriate department in the School of Medicine and participate in teaching and research or creative activities. Successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work successfully with and benefit a diverse student body.

The successful applicant must qualify for an academic appointment in Professor of Clinical X or Health Sciences Clinical series at the associate or full professor rank, and serve as the primary institutional leader for the medical education programs in the School of Medicine. The SADME will serve as the chief academic officer for the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine and will directly oversee all aspects of undergraduate medical education, work collaboratively with other institutional leaders who have primary responsibilities for other educational programs within the school. The SADME will be responsible for the design and management of the educational program as a whole; including planning, management, assessment and leadership of medical education.

The incumbent will be responsible for providing executive oversight for all matters related to medical education, assessment, innovation and integration, and compliance and accreditation. The SADME will identify and implement opportunities to evolve and enhance the School’s academic offerings to ensure that the School continues to offer diverse and cutting-edge programs, and collaborate with the Dean and other senior leaders to evaluate and enhance the health of the School’s academic programs.

Founded in 2013, the School of Medicine at UCR is the sixth University of California Medical School and serves the rapidly growing Inland Southern California region by training a much-needed physician workforce and catalyzing innovations in research, education, and healthcare delivery. The UCR School of Medicine’s mission is to improve the health of the community in the Inland Empire, one of the most ethnically diverse and medically underserved areas of the country. UCR is a world-class research university with an exceptionally diverse undergraduate student body. Its mission is explicitly linked to providing routes to educational success for underrepresented and first-generation college students. A commitment to this mission is a preferred qualification. Advancement through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.

The successful candidate must possess an M.D. degree and be licensed to practice in the state of California by the time of employment. The candidate must also demonstrate an evidence of Board Certification. Successful candidate should demonstrate a commitment to research, an excellent clinical record of expertise, and a strong commitment to the education of medical students and residents. The total time available for clinical duties will be negotiated with the department Chair and the Dean of the School of Medicine. The successful candidate will also be expected to show a record of research or scholarly activities appropriate for the academic appointments in Professor of Clinical X or Health Sciences Clinical series. Finally, the candidate must demonstrate appropriate administrative experience and a proven record of academic, and administrative leadership qualities. This position will also provide leadership and direction in meeting the mission of the School of Medicine. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
