Overall Responsibilities

a. Directs the coordination, design and implementation of all multi-disciplinary research projects funded from various intramural and extramural sources. Undertakes independent research in multiple areas of science, social science, humanities and the arts in order to participate in and facilitate research groups, evaluate proposals, and advise faculty in all disciplines about their work within the context of the UC MEXUS mission. In concert with the UC MEXUS Director, commissions and directs the coordination of special research projects resulting from the UC MEXUS annual Call for Proposals. The incumbent also assumes responsibility for directing the management and evaluation of these programs that are administered as a direct result of the current “Agreement of Cooperation in Higher Education and Research Between the Regents of the University of California (UC) and El Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología” (CONACYT). In addition, the incumbent provides advisement and coordination for program planning development, prospect identification and cultivation, and the solicitation of private (extramural) funding designated for academic research programs or special projects, within the guidelines of the UC MEXUS mission statement.

b. When specifically requested, the Academic Coordinator acts on behalf of the UC MEXUS Director for academic institutional partnership agreement/linkages between educational and research institutions and governmental offices in Mexico, UC MEXUS (on behalf of the university) and/or any of the 10 UC campuses. In consultation with UC MEXUS senior staff for budgetary and policy considerations, assists the Director in negotiations for financial arrangements for matching fund and cost sharing agreements between UC MEXUS and various higher educational institutions and governmental offices in Mexico and the US. The incumbent often assumes a lead role in the coordination and facilitation of local and international academic meetings, workshops, conferences, and research symposia as well as the coordination of special visits by visiting dignitaries from Mexican offices of education and government. As requested by the Director, serves as an official representative for UC MEXUS at professional meetings and college advisement and research programs, both in California and in Mexico. Prepares program budgets in consultation with the Director and participates in negotiations for cost sharing support for program participants in all academic research programs.

Grant Programs

a. Directs all UC MEXUS competitive grant programs, in all disciplines.
b. Develops and directs special grant programs in focused topics.
c. Advises potential grantees on the applicability of their proposed work to UC MEXUS priorities and programs.
d. Designs and directs the development and manages credible application and peer review processes, eligibility criteria, and evaluation criteria.
e. In concert with the Director, designs and directs the implementation of terms and conditions of awards for all grant programs.
f. Designs and directs the development of tools to analyze the results of review processes and make recommendations to the Director for the allocation of funds to projects.
g. Through the efforts of others, responsible for directing the process of monitoring progress of approved projects.
h. Advises principal investigators concerning programmatic difficulties or questions.
i. Develops content for and designs annual and special calls for proposals.
j. Directs the process and directly supervises and evaluates employees who are responsible for tracking all grant information, maintaining database and grants records and providing administrative support for committee and special meetings.
k. Develops and directs the organization for special meetings, workshops and conferences related to the grants programs.
l. As deemed necessary, provides analyses and recommendations for exceptional funding for projects submitted outside the annual UC MEXUS Call for Proposals.

Other Research Programs

a. Identifies and establishes goals and priorities for ongoing and one-time binational research programs commissioned by UC MEXUS by developing new strategies and approaches for program efficiency.
b. As requested, develops detailed annual research plans or focused projects in all disciplines, including development of specific research program goals within the guidelines of the UC MEXUS mission.
c. Provides advisement to UC Chancellors, graduate deans and program coordinators to facilitate the application process to UC MEXUS commissioned research projects.
d. Provides academic advice and guidance to graduate students, faculty and UC/Mexican academic administrators regarding their participation in UC MEXUS commissioned research projects.
e. Establishes promotional activities to encourage research projects between Mexican institutions and UC campuses, thereby facilitating the collaborations between students, postdoctoral researchers and scholars between Mexico and the US for UC MEXUS commissioned research
f. Individually and through the efforts of others, responsible for ensuring that appropriate UC and any applicable international policies regarding selection criteria and research guidelines are followed.
g. Provides analyses of program activities from both a professional and an academic basis and submits these analyses as requested in annual report form to the UC MEXUS Director, UC, CONACYT and various government agencies in Mexico and the US.
h. Through the efforts of others, responsible for providing timely reporting and program evaluation consisting of data, narrative, and financial statistics.

Development Activities

a. Works with the directorship and senior staff of UC MEXUS in marketing specific international research programs to various funding sources.
b. Prepares written reports or provides special materials for donor or grant funding agencies as requested.
c. Participates in the planning and production of academic research programs, conferences, symposia and public education events.
d. Provides advisement and recommendations to the UC MEXUS Director for potential collaborations for cost share programs with UC departments of campuses, institutions of higher education and research in Mexico, and governmental agencies in both Mexico and the US.


a. Serves as an ex-officio member and facilitator of both programs advisory committees and the UC MEXUS advisory committee.
b. Presents results of review processes and makes recommendation from committee consensus to the Director for the allocation of funds to projects.


a. Works in collaboration with other senior staff maintaining academic writing standards and providing editing for all publications generated by UC MEXUS.
b. Edits and provides materials and advisement for items posted on the UC MEXUS website.
c. In concert with other senior staff, often assumes a lead role in the coordination of special events and exhibits at UC campuses and institutions in Mexico.

Minimum Qualifications

a. Training and academic preparation leading to a Ph.D.
b. Requires an in-depth understanding of graduate level education and research programs at higher educational institutions in both Mexico and the United States
c. The ability to communicate in both English and Spanish at a professional academic and administrative level is necessary and an integral requirement of the position
d. A demonstrated ability and experience in data analysis and report writing
e. The ability to present themes, ideas, concepts and programmatic information in a clear concise manner to a variety of constituents
f. The ability to analyze and interpret data to design and implement an evaluation plan
g. The ability to supervise others and evaluate their work
h. Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills
i. Demonstrated experience with, and the ability to work effectively with others in analyzing, modifying, implementing, and evaluating academic research programs
j. Skill in writing concise, grammatically correct analytical or narrative materials
k. The ability to communicate persuasively to both a general and specific audience, both orally and in writing, regarding programs in higher education and research on topics of mutual interest to Mexico and the US
l. A working understanding of academic, research, and education functions, and the operation principles of a major research university environment
