Position description

The Department of Entomology at the University of California, Riverside invites applicants for an Assistant Specialist to conduct applied research for the Atkinson Lab. The purpose of this position is to be engaged on CDC and NIH‐funded projects that examine the role of the piRNA small RNA pathways in generating virus resistance in Culex and Aedes mosquitoes. The selected candidate will be specifically generating CRISPR‐mediated mutants in key piRNA biogenesis genes of these species, determining their gene expression levels in relevant tissues, and assessing their resistance and inherited immunity to viral infections. The selected candidate will assist with the preparation of manuscripts regarding their research and will present the outcomes of their research at meetings of the relevant professional societies and/or professional conferences or workshops. The selected candidate will assist with the training of undergraduate and graduate students in the techniques of microinjection and gene editing in the laboratory.

Basic qualifications for this position include: Ph.D. in entomology or related fields; demonstrated expertise and experience in the microinjection of insect embryos of mosquitoes or other pest-insect species; demonstrated experience in the rearing and genetic crossing of pest insect species, demonstrated experience and expertise in the use of CRISPR technology in pest insect species; and demonstrated expertise and experience in the use of molecular biological and genetic techniques applied to pest insect species.

Preferred qualification for this position include: experience with the preparation and publication of scientific manuscripts and with the presentation of data to audiences, and experience in the training of student researchers in the laboratory.
